Reed Selects: All-Time Best Golden Globe Lewks
It is no secret that one of our favorite things about award season is the mind altering Couture that walks the red carpet. And in honor (and immense anticipation) of this years Golden Globes Lewks, allow me to give you my favorite ones from years past.
These gowns and the Queens wearing them appear in no specific order. This isn’t a competition sis… this is a celebration of Fashion. Subsequently that might also be the gayest sentence I have ever typed.
Who: Kate Hudson
What: Atelier Versace
When: 2002 Golden Globes
Why: One thing you can always count on Kate to do is give you BODY. As exhibited here by the disco tinged Super-heroine column, accentuated with the go to accessory of the early Aughts, a low slung bejeweled belt, and the lowest (and might we add, best) neckline in all award show history. Also, that hair is giving me mayj heart burn it’s so Saucy.
Who: Nicole Kidman
What: Tom Ford for Yves Saint Laurent
When: 2003 Golden Globes
Why: I mean, where do I begin. This is during the hey day of the Tom Ford modern romantic and sensual dresses. The high low makes my feet tap, and that classic slick back puts Kidman’s GORGINA eyes on full display.
Who: Sarah Jessica Parker
What: Chanel Haute Couture
When: 2004 Golden Globes
Why: 2004 was smack in the Hey Day of one Carrie Bradshaw, and we cannot think of a better Globes lewk of Parker’s to personify CB. Clock the Shoes; Clock the perfection that is that half up / half down moment. L I V I N G ! !
Who: Cameron Diaz
What: Chanel Haute Couture
When: 2009 Golden Globes
Why: Cameron Diaz has had many a fabulous moment on the Globes red carpet (more than a few were in contention to make this list), but ultimately we had to go with this shocking pink Chanel. Combine it with her highly coveted (by me) California cool locks and metallic accessories, and you’ve got Best Dressed List GOLD!
Who: Maggie Gyllenhaal
What: Lanvin
When: 2009 Golden Globes
Why: I am just going to come out and say it; Maggie Gyllenhaal is an unsung hero of Fashion. Those mischievous eyes, and excitable features make her the perfect canvas for couture. And this blue based leopard with hints of black and fuchsia, the exaggerated one shoulder, and the signature Lanvin grosgrain waist belt, make her feel appropriate, yet perfectly rebellious.
Who: Anne Hathaway
What: Armani Prive
When: 2011 Golden Globes
Why: There was a time where the Hollywood elite were clad only in Armani Prive. And for damn good reason too! This sheath on Hathaway is not only one of my favorite Golden Globe Lewks, its also one of my favorite gowns of all time (One must simply clock the back of it to fully understand why).
Who: Lupita Nyong’o
What: Custom Ralph Lauren
When: 2014 Golden Globes
Why: It is always fun to see what someone wears to their first Globes and as far as Nyong’o is concerned her selection was RED HAUTE! The cleanliness of the lines, unfussy simplicity of the cut, mixed with the brazen hue of red made this lewk an instant best on every Best Dressed list to come.
Who: Emma Stone
What: Lanvin
When: 2015 Golden Globes
Why: What do you mean why? IT’S PANTS. The event suiting for women has definitely had it’s moments on the carpet (we are only thinking of you Celine Dion) but the pants and corset combo; deceased. This is another lewk that is almost as jaw dropping from the back as it is the front… almost.
Who: Lady Gaga
What: Custom Atelier Versace
When: 2016 Golden Globes
Why: Lady Gaga is one of our favorite chameleon’s on a red carpet, but for her first ever Globes appearance, she opted for a lewk we had yet to see the songstress portray; an old Hollywood Marilyn. LG gave us a full velvet fantasy by being curved and hugged in all the right places. Extra Points for those exaggerated hips (amirite Leo?).
Who: Mandy Moore
What: Naeem Khan
When: 2017 Golden Globes
Why: Moore, like Nyong’o and Gaga, also chose timeless couture for her first appearance on the Golden Globes red carpet. She’s giving me Grecian Royalty, She’s giving me Glimmering Bronzed Goddess, and She’s definitely giving 2002 Kate Hudson’s plunging neckline a run for it’s money. She also makes me want to obtain large amounts of chiffon, learn how to sew, and add capes to all of my blazers.
Who: Tracee Ellis Ross
What: Zuhair Murad
When: 2017 Golden Globes
Why: You would have to have been living under a literal rock to NOT know that Tracee Ellis Ross is my personal Spirit Animal and Baton Twirler, and this lewk is a fantastic example of why. Body conned and cleverly sheer, she accented the lewk with copious amounts of rings (because truly who only wants to wear one), and my most favorite of the heavenly hairstyles: The Low Pony of the Gods. *Cue dramatic faint
Who: Jake Gyllenhaal
What: It literally doesn’t matter, but Burberry (‘11), Gucci (‘15)
When: Then. Now. Always.
Why: An explantation is neither desired or required. If Jake Gyllenhaal doesn’t do something to the flow of oxygen in your body, I have no choice but to feel immense pity for you.
Any questions? We didn’t think so…
