Gumption Predicts: 2019 Golden Globes
This Sunday, 6 January, the Hautest of the Hollywood Who’s Who will descend upon the Beverly Hilton Hotel for the 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards. Who will win? Who will wear the best couture? Who will get a wee bit over served in front of Millions of people on live TV? I’ve taken the liberty to give you my picks in the night’s biggest categories.
As far as Award Shows go, the Golden Globes are my absolute beloved. All those celebrities, draped in gorgeous couture, seated in a room too small for the actual number of attendees, and every mood seems that of ease and fun at the top of award season! Let’s take a look at some of the contenders vying for a little bit of gold at this year’s ceremony.
Best Motion Picture - Drama
A Star is born
blackkklansman
bohemian rhapsody
black panther
if Beale street could talk
Will Win: A Star is Born. The Bradley Cooper directed remake (it’s fourth to be exact), was a raw take on the original source material and gave an honest look at the perils of fame and the pitfalls of mental illness.
Best Motion Picture: comedy / Musical
crazy rich asians
the favourite
Green book
mary poppins returns
vice
Will Win: Crazy Rich Asians - I have to say, this is maybe my favorite film of the year. It’s colorful and brash, and yet still a beautiful romantic dramadey that feels planted in reality. It’s a crime that Awkwafina was robbed of a nomination, but I am satisfied knowing that her star is increasingly on the rise! Also, it gave me my new favorite fashion icon, Gemma Chan.
Best actress: motion picture drama
Glenn Close, “the wife”
lady gaga, “A Star Is Born”
Melissa McCarthy, “Can you ever forgive me?”
Nicole Kidman, “Destroyer”
Rosamund Pike, “A private war”
Will Win: Lady Gaga - Her performance in A Star is Born was beautiful and nuanced. She made us cry, laugh and dance in our reclining theaters chairs, all within the same film. Not to mention, she is beloved by the Hollywood Foreign Press (as evidenced by her previous win for American Horror Story: HOTEL), and I do believe that come Sunday her statuette will have a new buddy (or two) to hang out with.
Best actor: motion picture drama
bradley cooper, “A Star Is Born”
John David Washington, “BlacKkKlansman”
Lucas Hedges, “Boy erased”
rami malek, “Bohemian Rhapsody”
Willem Dafoe, “At eternity’s gate”
Will Win: Rami Malek - Although we literally felt our heartstrings being emotionally tugged by Bradley Cooper’s performance in A Star is Born, we have to give the Golden Globe to Malek. His portrayal of Queen front man Freddie Mercury was lavish and decimating. Also, we call it for him based on his nearly unrecognizable transformation into the master of rock.
best actress: motion picture comedy / musical
Constance Wu, “Crazy Rich Asians”
Charlize Theron, Tully”
Elsie Fisher, Eight grade”
Emily Blunt, “Mary Poppins Returns”
Olivia Colman, “The Favourite”
Will Win: Emily Blunt - Blunt is the perfect person to pick up the Parrot Umbrella from the incomparable Julie Andrews. Also, I just feel like it has to be said, but WHY IS EMILY BLUNT NOT A BIGGER DEAL??! She’s immensely talented, a veritable chameleon on the screen, and so stunningly gorgeous and likable that I feel compelled to start a letter writing campaign to have her run for president in 2020.
best actor: motion picture comedy / musical
Christian Bale, “Vice”
John C. Reilly, “Stan & Ollie”
Lin-Manuel Miranda, “Mary Poppins Returns”
Robert Redford, “The old man & the gun”
Viggo Mortensen, “Green Book”
Will Win: Christian Bale - To be honest, this category is not a settled one. However, I am leaning toward the much buzzed about (and for good reason) performance from Bale as the former Vice-President, Dick Cheney. I do however think it necessary to state that both Lin-Manuel Miranda and Viggo Mortensen have a fairly decent shot at snatching the trophy as well.
best supporting actress in any motion picture
Amy Adams, “Vice”
Claire Foy, “First Man”
Emma Stone, “The Favourite”
Rachel Weisz, “The Favourite”
Regina King, “If Beale Street Could Talk”
Will Win: Regina King - King is a three time Emmy winner and a 3 time Globe nominee, but this year feels like it will finally be her year to take home the Gold. A consummate actress, her performance in If Beale Street Could Talk, has had both critics and audiences raving for her as well as building a strong award season stance.
best supporting actor in any motion picture
Adam Driver, “BlacKkKlansman”
Mahershala Ali, “Green Book”
Richard E. Grant, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”
Sam Rockwell, “Vice”
Timothée Chalamet, “Beautiful Boy”
Will Win: Timotheé Chalamet - Chalamet gave one of the most haunted performances in last years Call Me by Your Name, and he showed up once again to break our hearts with his drug addicted son of Steve Carrel in Beautiful Boy. Although, Ali was a winner last year, this year feels like the time that the HFPA gives Chalamet the attention and love he deserves in the few shorts years that he has been on the scene.
best television series drama
“The Americans” FX
“Bodyguard” Netflix
“homecoming” Amazon
“killing eve” BBC America
“pose” FX
Will Win: Killing Eve - if you add the immense love for the drama, and the fact that the HFPA loves to recognize new series, plus the fact that it’s star (Sandra Oh) is a nominee and the big night’s co-host (along with funny man frat guy Andy Samberg), there really is just no other choice to be made.
best television series comedy
“Barry,” HBO
“the good place” NBC
“kidding” Showtime
“The kominsky method” Netflix
“The marvelous mrs. maisel” Amazon
Will Win: The Good Place - if The Good Place found it’s footing in Season 2, then it has turned the volume up to ten with Season 3. Kristen Bell is a modern day Carol Burnette and who doesn’t love the one and only Ted Danson?!? also, I have to shout out the amazing D’Arcy Carden!!!
best actress television drama
Caitriona Balfe, “Outlander”
Elisabeth Moss, “The Handmaid’s Tale”
Julia Roberts, “Homecoming”
Keri Russell, “The Americans”
sandra oh, “Killing Eve”
Will Win: Sandra Oh - Although it goes against every fiber of my being to not write Julia Roberts name on any ballot (especially after turning in a stellar performance in Homecoming), this feels like Oh’s moment. And also, you just can’t ignore the fact that she is co-hosting the show… sort of bodes well for this kind of instance doncha think?
best actor television drama
Billy Porter, “Pose”
Jason Bateman, “Ozark”
Matthew Rhys, “The Americans”
Richard Madden, “Bodyguard”
Stephan James, “Homecoming
Will Win: Billy Porter - This one is purely emotional, but Billy Porter is a national treasure. His performance (not to mention his delivery of some of the most ICONIC one liners in recent years) was beyond perfection. Good to note, his performance of ‘Home’ with his co-star MJ Rodriguez was so amazing, I now have spinal issues from the chills.
best actress television comedy / musical
Alison Brie, “Glow”
Candice Bergen, “Murphy Brown”
Debra Messing, “Will & Grace”
Kristen Bell, “The Good Place”
Rachel Brosnahan, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”
Will Win: Rachel Brosnahan - As much as I want this to go home with Bell here (because, Frozen and Veronica Mars), I’m sensing a repeat win for Brosnahan, who won last year for her role of a female comic in a time when women were to be anything but unapologetically outspoken.
best actor television comedy / musical
Bill Hader, “Barry”
Donald Glover, “Atlanta”
jim carrey, “Kidding”
Michael Douglas, “the kominsky method”
Sacha Baron Cohen, “Who is america?”
Will Win: Bill Hader - I love me some Bill Hader. I also loves me some dark comedy. Put the two together and you have a delectable Macabre McNugget of goodness.
Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Will Win: The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story - Ryan Murphy once again showed the tragedy, beauty, and aftermath of one of the biggest scandals ever to rock the fashion world. Darren Criss’ wickedly haunting portrayal of Versace’s killer, Andrew Cunanan is one we will remember for a long time to come. Judith Light and Penelope Cruz also submitted beautiful supporting performances.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television
Will Win: Darren Criss, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story - Criss’ performance her completely made us forget about his squeaky clean days of Glee past, playing a gay man at odds with his own inner demons who was responsible for the deaths of multiple men including the aforementioned Fashion Designer, Gianni Versace.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television
Will Win: Connie Britton, Dirty John - Britton is no stranger to appearing on the best actress list, but with. Dirty John ( a massive critical darling as well as the recipient of a ton of fan buzz) seems clenched to be her path to Golden Globe Gold. The HFPA also loves to reward careers or bodies of work with their decisions sometimes, and this feels right in line with that kind of thinking.
best supporting actress in television series, limited series or television movie
Will Win: Alex Borstein, Marvelous Mrs. Maisal - hot off her 2018 Emmy win in the same category, I’m feeling another night for celebration is in store for the Borstein camp. Additionally, Borstein is a legend in comedy industry and is WELL past due for these kind of accolades.
** Additionally rooting for Penelope Cruz (the Assassination of Gianni Versace), and Yvonne Strahovski (the Handmaid’s Tail) here. Why the Hollywood Foreign Press chooses to combine the Drama and Comedy categories only for the supporting actors is so beyond me, but I do believe it gives me license to make more than one selection.
best supporting actor in television series, limited series or television movie
Will Win: Édgar Ramírez, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story - Ramirez portrayed one of the fashion industries most coveted geniuses, and he did it to perfection. The look, the softness of both his tone and his love for fashion and family was played out beautifully on screen.
